What are the admission requirements for the program?

Admission to TMI requires:

  • senior status at or a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • a GPA of 2.0 on a four-point scale. *
  • Praxis I scores with requirement minimum: Reading - 172 (test 0710 or 5710), Writing - 173 (test 0720 or 5720), and Mathematics - 172 (test 0730 or 5730). Please note that NTE and CBT test scores are no longer being accepted.
  • Praxis II subject area test in one of the following areas with required minimum score. Go to the ETS website for a complete list of Mississippi Praxis II Subject Area Tests. Please remember that participants in the Teach Mississippi Institute are only eligible for a secondary school license (grade 7 through 12). Your Praxis II test must be appropriate for secondary school teachers. If you have questions about what Praxis II test you should take, please contact the Mississippi Department of Education, Teacher Licensure Division at cchester@mde.k12.ms.us or 601-359-3483.
  • payment of a $40 non-refundable application fee. Checks and money orders should be made payable to University of Mississippi/TMI.
  • TMI Application completed and signed.
  • submission to a background check with CertifiedBackground.com. Further information will be provided after we receive your application. All applicants must submit to the background check.

* Students who do not meet the goal requirement might be eligible for admission on a probationary basis.

How do I register for the Praxis Examinations?

Admission to the program requires the Praxis scores noted above. Praxis test dates, registration, and other information are available online at www.ets.org/praxis/prxreg.html. Mississippi specific tests, required scores, and Test-at-a-Glance preparation materials are also available at www.ets.org/praxis/prxms.html. To send your scores directly to our office please select our institution code: RA1806.

Praxis I tests may NOT be taken at the same administration as the Praxis II test (time does not permit). The testing company states that some Praxis scores are now available electronically as a PDF file. Be sure to save the Adobe PDF of your Praxis I and II scores. The electronic copy is your official score report. You may forward a copy of the scores to our office via e-mail at tmi@olemiss.edu.

Computerized Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST)

In addition to the paper/pencil versions of the tests, Praxis I may be taken by appointment on the computer. The following centers offer computerized testing (Praxis I only):

The Praxis I may also be taken at any Sylvan Learning Center (check the phone directory in larger population centers).

How do I apply?

To apply, please complete the PDF Application

You must send the signed form, the application fee, which is $40 (check or money order payable to TMI), plus official college transcripts from your degree-granting institutions, official copies of both Praxis I Test Scores and Praxis II Speciality Area Test Score(s) to Teach Mississippi Institute, P.O. Box 729, University, MS 38677 in order for your application to be considered. Please make sure all items are received in our office to guarantee that your application will be considered for admission. When you register for the Praxis I and Praxis II, make sure you select your scores to be sent to the Teach Mississippi Institute (recipient code – 1806). If you request them to be sent to Ole Miss, your scores will be sent to the School of Education and are classified information that cannot be released to us.

Completion of this application does not guarantee acceptance to the Teach Mississippi Institute.
